Hello!

I recognize myself in your posts about graduate school and how hard it is. I am a Ph.D. candidate in biology, about to start my sixth(!) year of grad school. I just wanted to let you know you are not alone in your struggles with academia: I struggle with it too. Sometimes I win, sometimes I lose. There is no easy answer when it comes to deciding whether to leave or not, but I don't think your hope that it will get better is misplaced. Grad school is a roller coaster: sometimes you're up, sometimes you're down.

I hope you find the strength and peace of mind to make the best decision for yourself. I am sure you are stronger than you think, and you can do this. You have to believe you can do it--believing is half the battle.

And do try to take good care of yourself. I think eating well, exercising, and blowing off steam (boxing or otherwise) help a lot when you are struggling with your graduate work.

Take care, contemplative one.

Hey, I thought I would check up on your blog. Sorry things are tough for you in Grad school. I have been through the depressed-undergrad stage, and I can only imagin grad school is so much harder. I do know that you are a freakin' genius, so I hope whatever happens, you are able to apply yourself to something that is challenging and rewarding. Good luck, Lin. It is good to be in touch.

Thanks for the hint, I'll have to give it a shot.

Someday I'll try real grits, but I think I need to get someone else to make them since I don't know what I'm shooting for.

They use amaranth in some gluten-free recipes, as part of a substitute for the usual grains. Might have a little success finding recipes that use it if you give that search a shot.

That said, I've never enjoyed grits (and after seven years in Alabama, I've had a lot of them). I'm glad to hear yours turned out, well, pretty yummy at least.

I'll be interested to hear the results of this one. I've heard that, for some people, it works out fine; for others, not so much. I have a hard time actually being awake before 8:00, no matter how many hours of sleep I get the night before.

I'd highly recommend getting software like Quicken or Microsoft Money. It'll automate a lot of the bookkeeping, because you can set it up to download the latest transactions from your bank, credit cards, etc. You can also generate reports and charts to easily see where your money is going. I've been using Quicken since I started grad school, and it has helped me keep track of exactly how much money I have. Since I started using it, I haven't had any overdraft fees or been late on bill payments.

Hi, Jack :) Sorry about not getting back to you sooner. Life's been very hectic. How are you?

I see where you're coming from for most of your comments, but I disagree about the epilogue. You say that it didn't leave Harry as a hero, but I think that was the point. I feel Rowling was trying to show that after all those years Harry is finally living a "normal" life. It wasn't something she necessarily had to include, but it wasn't completely without use.

But of course you know I agree with you on the "all Slytherins are evil" point. It's one of the things that has always bothered me about the books.

Hope you'll keep writing in your blog. It was good to hear from you.

You update more than I do. I haven't been reading because I didn't know you were still writing here, but I will be more faithful now. :)
